Standard 6 - Teaching

Standard 6 - Teaching

Teach and respond to learners in a knowledgeable and adaptive way to progress their learning at an appropriate depth and pace.

Elaboration

Teach in ways that ensure all learners are making sufficient progress, and monitor the extent and pace of learning, focusing on equity and excellence for all.
• Specifically support the educational aspirations for Māori learners, taking shared responsibility for these learners to achieve educational success as Māori.
• Use an increasing repertoire of teaching strategies, approaches, learning activities, technologies and assessment for learning strategies and modify these in response to the needs of individuals and groups of learners.
• Provide opportunities and support for learners to engage with, practise and apply learning to different contexts and make connections with prior learning.
• Teach in ways that enable learners to learn from one another, to collaborate, to self-regulate and to develop agency over their learning.
• Ensure learners receive ongoing feedback and assessment information and support them to use this information to guide further learning

12.3.19
After running the māori academy last year, there are things I've learnt in so many respects. One thing that I'm very committed to is creating lesson plans that are engaging and really help the children learn vocab, sentence structures and perhaps most importantly, a respect and understanding of tikanga māori. Because of time restraints we (respectfully) power through karakia and whakatauki so we can do a bit of revision and then crack into the new material. I'm so thrilled with the resources we have accumulated and continue to add to, as I have a number of places to go when I prepare lessons.....te reo singalong books are incredibly valuable! I keep a pattern to the lessons so there's a predictability for students who need that, and we can clearly refer to things from week to week.
Regarding progress and assessment, this will be done by observation only. I made it very clear in our first session that there will be no testing, no scores, no reports as this is not my objective in running the sessions. What I'm looking for is an ability and joy with interacting in te ao māori. This is more of a feeling rather than score.

For the sessions I try and maintain a balance between keeping things familiar and structured with doing things that are different. There is generally listening followed by writing and then speaking. When appropriate I try and make things visual so they are more memorable. When there are songs, we sing.
If anything in the lesson reminds us of prior knowledge or experiences, we talk about that to make connections and deepen the understanding.
