Today I had my appraisal with Blair and we discussed where I'm at, ideas, questions, focus, next year etc. It was really great to fill him in on how Māori academy is going, with comparison to last year, and why I do what I do. He is fully supportive of the programme and was very complimentary of the results he's seeing, referring to Kapa Haka and the māori academy assembly earlier in the week. It was great to hear him validate my role and give me his blessing to continue next year. I feel very supported at Summerland and I'm so happy to continue to evolve what I do with the tamariki in Term 4 and on through 2020.

Te rā tēnei, I have attended a bi-lingual hui at Henderson Intermediate about clarity in what is to be learnt. I've met about 12 other teachers from the area who teach in full immersion or bi-lingual units. So welcoming to me as a 'tweedle dee' who jumped in to hear their kōrero. It's always so nice to be around the māori wairua...so much aroha and manaakitanga.

Parents of the māori academy kids have all been connected to our learning through the seesaw app from day one. Feedback from parents regarding their children being in the group has been 100% positive and continues to be in comments posted on my updates. It's great to be forming a little whanau within the school and I intend on having a parent/whanau afternoon in Term 2 and 4 o we can all get to know eachother beyond the walls of the PLC. I'm not sure about the format of this session but I'm sure as time passes, I'll be inspired in some way. Ideally I'd like to leave it quite open to parents, siblings, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins etc....watch this space!
Regarding Kapa Haka, I've now got Pera to work with which is a game changer. Last year I had 60-80 kids and ran the whole thing alone which was a really tough ask. This year I wanted to have 40-45 max and I've ended up with 83!!!!! We've made a plan to teach all of our waiata to everyone but as the year progresses we'll be watching closely for children who are really committed and show talent and those tamariki will be invited to be part of the performance group. It was so nice to decide on that today as I was really torn on the balance between wanting a more manageable number and not wanting to restrict children from participating. Pera has a wealth of experience with kapa haka so any and all of her direction will be so well received.

This year as I've facilitated the māori academy, I've enjoyed building close relationships with many students and their whanau. The students who attend feel like a little whanau themselves and look after eachother and reach out to eachother in a unique way. This relationship is born out of being in 'the group' and is transferring to other areas of their school life.
Teachers have approached me for help and ideas which I am happy to help with.
